Born and died in Verona, Pindemonte was a poet of the late Enlightenment and early Romantic years, and a friend of Ugo Foscolo, who dedicated Dei Sepolcri to him. He is remembered above all for his Odissea, an Italian verse translation published in full in 1822, which critics describe as a free rewriting, faithful to the spirit of the Greek rather than its letter. It is the text Sons of Troy set to music in Ulisse!
