Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Cawein spent most of his life there, and the woods, streams, fields and changing seasons of Kentucky became the physical and imaginative territory of his poetry. His work often moves from close observation of nature into a world of dreams, memory, ghosts and death. He was a poet of atmosphere as much as narrative, and his landscapes frequently seem to absorb the emotional life of the person looking at them. He died in 1914.
