O Zombis !

Haiti, around 1850, in French. Nobody is sure who wrote it: the poem is attributed to either Chambeau Nelson or Liautaud Étheart. I would not pick one for you.

A poem that talks to the dead, not about them. Each stanza names an hour, evening, noon, midnight, and ends on the same call: “O Zombis!” The Haitian night is all there: the Hougan in his Houmfort, the Houanga, candles left on a whitened grave, the bamboula dance the dead used to know. The speaker asks them to remember the party they left behind, and the dancer who is now in tears. Zombies are usually the ones who frighten. Here they are addressed politely, by name, like guests who stayed too long.
