Joel Benton

1832–1911

Born in Amenia, New York, Benton worked across several literary worlds: he wrote poetry, edited and wrote for newspapers, lectured, and produced studies of figures such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Edgar Allan Poe. His work often brought literary history and the texture of everyday American life together. He died in Poughkeepsie in 1911.
